When they do they start to break apart and these particles taint the fluid -this means the power-steering pump has to work harder and if not fixed - eventually this will cause it to break down.

Power Steering Fluid replacement means draining or flushing out your car's old power-steering fluid and then adding fresh power steering fluid.

This fluid is the cheapest component of your power-steering system and replacing it when needed extends the life of other, more expensive power-steering parts like the power-steering rack and the power-steering pump. So it is a good idea to have this done on a regular basis.
